| 1. Sorting: Raw wool is sorted to skirt (remove dirt and chaff at edges) the fleece and grade
it |
| 2. Picking: This opens the wool to make washing
easier |
| 3. Washing: Wool is washed in a series of tanks with very little detergent to give a gentle, environmentally friendly
wash |
| 4. Drying: Wool is dried in our custom built dryer to preshrink it before being
carded |
| 5.Picking: Wool is picked again to open the wool for carding and to knock out chaff and hay loosened by the
washing |
| 6.Carding: The wool is then carded to straighten and align all of the fibres in the same direction. Batting comes off the first breaker and roving comes off the second
breaker |
| 7. Spinning: Spinning is done to twist the wool into yarn giving it
strength |
| 8. Twisting: Single ply yarns are twisted together to make two or more ply
yarns |
| 9. Conditioning: Wool is
skeined, washed and dried again to set the twist and colour |
| 10. Finished Products: Finished yarn may be woven into blankets or knitted into toques, socks, sweaters and
mittens |
